BATAVIA — A Batavia fabrication, repair and manufacturing business in the town of Batavia is less than 5 years old, but is the recipient of the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce’s Agricultural Business of the Year Award.

L&M Specialty Fabrication, LLC, 4868 East Saile Drive, offers services from fixing broken attachments and replacing parts to designing and manufacturing harvesting machines.

“We fabricate, manufacture and repair on a personal level, either creating or modifying heavy equipment for farmers and construction firms. In addition to the fabrication work, we also sell common farm equipment repairs needs like ball bearings, sprockets and chains,” the company says on its website.

Fabricator Matt Geissler said L&M started out in 2017 as mainly a custom repair and fabrication shop. The company is now in a $2.2 million facility.

“I’m a partner in the business, but I’m a fabricator, a repair guy out in the shop,” said Geissler, who co-founded the company with fabricator Lee Shuknecht and general manager Sarah Geissler. “At this location, we’ve been here since 2019. We originally started in a rented building in Albion. We had a lot of support from the ag community, as soon as we started, with equipment and new ideas We’ve never really seen a slow time since.

“We’ve grown into a farms part supplier,” he said. “We manufacture our own line of equipment and we’ve also expanded the repair capabilities as well. We manufacture mainly, from the ground up, ag equipment. We do a lot of repair on construction and industrial equipment, too. Pretty much anything that anybody has an idea for, we can build or fix, or modify.”

L&M’s facility is roughly 23,000 square feet.

“The office and parts and our hydraulic is in the front part of the building. The entire back of the building is devoted to manufacturing and repair,” he said. “We’re looking at expanding to free up some shop space for repairs that’s currently being taken up for storage.”

Geissler said L&M started with, basically, just a welder and some hand tools.

“We’ve grown into C&C Equipment and expanded a lot in that line, as well as added a lot of really good employees to be able to take on more of a workload and provide better service. We have 10 people working in the shop and we have three people in the office taking care of the billing, ordering, accounting, stuff like that,” he said.

Matt Geissler and Sarah Geissler said they learned about the award through a call in late January from the county Chamber of Commerce.

“We came out in the shop and told everybody. I think everybody was pleasantly surprised that a company as young as us would be recognized for that award,” Matt Geissler said.

The Chamber told L&M one of the reasons it got the award was how fast it was able to grow to where it is now, plus the services L&M provides to the area farmers, Matt Geissler said.

“We do deal with a large majority of the ag community. Hopefully we are able to support most of those people,” he said. “Being able to be recognized and know that people appreciate all the hard work that goes into supporting the ag community is good.”

On the county Chamber of Commerce website, the chamber said of L&M, “Being in the agricultural market, they fabricate and repair used farm equipment for a variety of customers across Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming counties. They are most well known for their TurboTop Onion Harvester (very popular in Elba). However, their business is all about innovation and most clients come to them with a unique problem that L&M is asked to engineer a solution for.

“The Genesee County Chamber commends L&M Specialty Fabrication for its business savvy creativity in the Agriculture Industry and its commitment to growing locally in Genesee County, NY. We are pleased to announce and honor them as the 2020 Agricultural Business of the Year.”

Matt Geissler said L&M would like to thank its dedicated employees.

A lot of them have been with us from the very start and would do anything to help our customers out, which has helped us be successful from the start. L&M is always looking to expand or diversify its products, he said.

“I think a big area where we expand, really daily, is our parts store and our hydraulic side of the business, just to be able to have a lot of the parts on hand to help customers out when they’re broken down and want to get back up and going,” Matt Geissler said.
