SAN JOSE — Align Technology, maker of the Invisalign orthodontics system, has shifted its headquarters from San Jose to Arizona but will keep an innovation hub in north San Jose.

The company moved its headquarters to Tempe, Ariz. on Jan. 1, but vowed to retain a major presence in Silicon Valley.

“The company’s San Jose campus remains the hub for its global innovation, product, and marketing organization and will become home to its new Digital Innovation Center, currently under construction,” Align Technology said in a prepared release.

About 150 employees, who work primarily in corporate, general, and administrative roles, have been offered relocation packages to move to Arizona. However, these employees were also given the option to either move to Arizona or remain working from their current locations.

Align Technology made it clear that the corporate shifts are designed to tap the world-class tech talent in Silicon Valley — yet also take advantage of the considerably lower business costs in Arizona relative to the Bay Area.

“This change will afford many new opportunities for Align to expand its industry-leading digital capabilities through innovation in San Jose while achieving greater, long-term operating efficiencies in Arizona,” said Joe Hogan, Align’s chief executive officer.

Four top executives will be based in Arizona: the chief executive officer, chief financial officer, chief regulatory and legal officer, and senior vice president of human resources, Align Technology said.

Align Technology owns an office building at 2820 Orchard Parkway that totals 130,000 square feet. In March 2020, Align bought an adjacent north San Jose building at 3 W. Plumeria Drive that totals 88,000 square feet, paying $21.3 million in cash for the building.

“We chose Tempe for our new corporate headquarters for many reasons, including its proximity to San Jose, favorable corporate operating environment, low cost of living, and overall quality of life,” Hogan said.
