Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana donated $25,000 to the Salvation Army of Lake County Indiana at a ceremony May 4 at the Salvation Army headquarters in Gary.

Matt Schuffert, president of Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana, presented Capt. Amanda Keene, Corps officer in charge of the Gary-Merrillville Community Center, with an oversized check for $25,000, according to a release. The funds will support programs and services provided by the community center including the Pathway of Hope initiative that helps recipients build a future by connecting them to additional support services such as job training, housing options, health services, childcare and education, the release said.

The Gary-Merrillville Corps Community Center provides rent, utilities and food assistance to those who are at risk of homelessness and hunger, as well as summer and after-school programs for local children, youth activities and support services for women and seniors, the release said.

Franciscan Health Crown Point has been awarded the inaugural Peregrine Award for Trauma Innovation by Peregrine Health Services LLC for its efforts to improve the treatment of patients with substance use disorders, according to a release.

A panel of independent judges selected Franciscan Health Crown Point’s project from a group of 10 finalists, with the application receiving the highest total score in its category, the release said.

Franciscan Health Crown Point sought to improve its screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment process, an approach to identifying and assisting patients with substance use disorders, a release said. The hospital then received grant funding to develop a program for the emergency department and inpatient population, the release said.

The grant allowed for the hiring of a peer recovery coach and a substance use disorder licensed social worker and allowed the hospital to lead educational sessions for the substance use community, the majority of which are offered free of charge, the release said.

NiSource Inc. reported first-quarter profit of $333 million, according to an Associated Press report.

On a per-share basis, the Merrillville-based utility company said it had net income of 71 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were 77 cents per share.

The results matched Wall Street expectations, the AP said. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was also for earnings of 77 cents per share. The energy holding company posted revenue of $1.97 billion in the period.

NiSource expects full-year earnings in the range of $1.54 to $1.60 per share.

Opportunity Enterprises raised more than $400,000 at its 30th annual gala in April at Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City.

The title sponsor of the event was M&S Collision Centers in partnership with Enterprise. This year’s gala helped to raise $407,094 for OE’s mission and quality programs that serve Northwest Indiana, the release said. Presented by Delta Theta Tau, the event is a chance for community members and stakeholders to gather in support of OE’s mission and hear about the impact OE has throughout Northwest Indiana. With silent and live auctions, as well as a paddle raise, the event also serves as the organization’s premier fundraising event, the release said.

President and CEO Neil Samahon mentioned a number of projects OE is completing in order to serve a wider range of clients, including Lakeside Respite Center at Lake Eliza, an accessible treehouse, Corporate Inclusivity Consulting and Camp Lakeside, a day camp for children of all abilities in the region, the release said, and that OE will soon begin serving people with dementia through its day programs.
