The awards continue to pile up for Sam Dellaporta.

The Cartersville High graduating senior snagged third place in the Digital Photo Production category of the Georgia Educational Student Technology Competition for his image titled “On the Road.”

“I was very surprised,” the Cartersville resident said. “It was a little nerve-racking knowing I was competing with the best of the best, but I was confident.”

Dellaporta’s teacher, Instructional Technology Specialist Mary Ann Little, also was pleased with his award.

“I am extremely proud for him and his accomplishments,” she said. “He is very talented and deserving of this recognition.”

Besides winning a gold medal in the regional competition, Dellaporta will receive a bronze medal for his third-place state finish and was presented a certificate by Cartersville City School Board President Kelley Dial.

Produced by the Georgia Educational Technology Consortium, the highest-level technology competition in the state for third- through 12th-graders had been scheduled for March but had to be turned into video presentations with virtual judging.

“With the COVID-19 pandemic, the state competition was initially cancelled,” Little said. “Coordinators and students were later notified of the opportunity to enter a video project presentation with virtual judging. Sam prepared his video presentation and entered.”

“We had to record ourselves presenting our projects,” Dellaporta, 18, said. “GaSTC [Georgia Student Technology Competition] gave us questions to answer in our videos so it was like an interview.”

Judging took place May 13-20, and winners were announced May 22.

“I am happy with the results,” said Dellaporta, who competed against 12 other contestants in his category. “I do wish I could of seen what I was going up against.”

Little said she thinks Dellaporta’s entry in the contest “reflects his ability to merge what is meaningful to him — his favorite locations — with his gifted photography and editing skills,” she said.

“Sam is to be congratulated for his winning photography project as well as his preparation for a virtual competition,” she said.

Dellaporta added he took the photo while lying on the road leading to one of his favorite lake spots.

The son of Peyton Dellaporta and Michael Dellaporta said he plans to attend Georgia Highlands College, but he’s also considering enrolling at Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Montana.

“I still do want to become a filmmaker, but I would also like to get into photography,” he said.
