EVERSON, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the 1600 block of Mission Road in Everson about 12:20am on Friday, September 1st, due to report of a commercial structure fire.
Whatcom County Fire District 1 (WCFD1) Fire Chief Rachel Carlson told Whatcom News they arrived on scene to find smoke coming out of the business’ sawdust hopper unit while employees were attempting to extinguish the fire using their on-site fire suppression system.
Firefighters established a water supply using a nearby hydrant and began to cool the hopper unit.
The doors to the hopper unit had closed which made accessing the seat of the fire from below difficult. Engines from North Whatcom Fire and Rescue and the Lynden Fire Department arrived as mutual aid. Crews had difficulty accessing the fire from the top of the hopper unit due to the belt conveyor and elevator components.

Business employees were able to get the hopper doors partially opened giving firefighters access to the fire. The fire was extinguished and the scene was turned back over to employees.
