These past few months have highlighted how ill-prepared America and the rest of the world are when it comes to fighting deadly diseases.
Our country needs to invest in global health measures to ensure that something like this never happens again. If it hadn’t been COVID-19, another disease would have wreaked havoc throughout the world.
Global health is more important than ever. Diseases refuse to respect international borders, so it is important that countries collaborate to combat their common enemy. The Global Health Security Act is one step in the right direction. It would establish an Interagency Review Council that would provide policy recommendations, require reports on progress and challenges, and more. We need more funding and interaction with other countries if we want to prevent this from happening again.
I applaud U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna for cosponsoring the legislation, and I implore Sens. Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein to do the same.
