ROCKFORD (WREX) — Janene Stephenson’s Social Café hosts pop up shops every month, but today’s event hit a little closer to home for the business owner.
“We are trying to showcase some of our women in business for Black History Month,” Stephenson said.
A handful of entrepreneurs including authors, jewelers and crafters filled the space on Saturday. For small businesses, any type of retail space has been hard to find.
Author Candace Newson says she’s done nearly everything to try to get her books into people’s hands.
“Word of mouth, going back to my old job and selling books there, and putting things out on social media,” Newson said.
However, even as Newson set up in the space she’d been hustling to get into for months, she found something even more valuable.
“We all get a little depressed when we don’t have that external motivation,” Newson said. “I’ve been able to find it by these women who want to hustle, want to promote their business and want to support each other. It’s been nothing but good for me.”
The Social Café will continue their pop up show on Sunday from two to six in the afternoon and on February 13 from one to five in the afternoon.
