World of Warcraft just confirmed official Hardcore realms are coming to Classic Era in the near future. Though fans have played Hardcore World of Warcraft for most of Classic’s lifespan, players will soon have servers with official support for the challenging game mode.
Previously, World of Warcraft players discovered evidence that Blizzard was working on Hardcore realms for Classic WoW. They also found a new client build for Classic World of Warcraft that suggested something big was coming to the nostalgic servers soon.
Now, World of Warcraft Classic players have official confirmation that Hardcore realms are on the way. Near the end of the Hardcore Allstars Classic WoW event stream, World of Warcraft Classic developer Aggrend briefly appeared to make a formal announcement of the new realms. According to Aggrend, the Classic WoW dev team has always appreciated Hardcore fans, and is happy to finally give it an official platform. These one-life Hardcore realms are expected to go live this summer, but will be on the Public Test Realm soon.
Aggrend couldn’t share many details of how the Hardcore realms would work yet, but he did give World of Warcraft players a taste of a few features they could expect. Once players die, they will still be able to log in to their characters, but they will be stuck as ghosts and be unable to revive. This will allow players to still explore the world, talk with their friends, and handle other logistics like transferring guild leadership, even after they die. Additionally, Hardcore players will be able to challenge others to a special duel to the death. Fittingly named /makgora after the famous Orcish duel in World of Warcraft lore, players can use this new feature to permanently kill other players who accept their challenge.
Were that not exciting enough, Aggrend also confirmed Blizzard was working on a new season for World of Warcraft Classic. Though he could not share any specific details, he did confirm it wasn’t associated with the Hardcore realms, and that it was not just a second WoW Season of Mastery. Players will have to wait and see if this new season will be Classic Plus or some other twist on the WoW formula.
Either way, World of Warcraft Classic fans are excited to hear official support for Hardcore realms is coming soon. Players were especially excited about the /makgora duels, and many players hope Retail can eventually get the same option, even if it carries less weight. With big things coming to Classic soon, now is the perfect time for World of Warcraft fans to check out what the retro servers have to offer.
World of Warcraft is available now for PC.
